AREAS OF PRACTICE

ASBESTOS
Asbestos is the name given to a group of six different fibrous minerals (amosite, chrysotile, crocidolite, and the fibrous varieties of tremolite, actinolite, and anthophyllite) that occur naturally in the environment. One of these, namely chrysotile, belongs to the serpentine family of minerals, while all of the others belong to the amphibole family.

All forms of asbestos are hazardous, and all can cause cancer, but amphibole forms of asbestos are considered to be somewhat more hazardous to health than chrysotile. Asbestos minerals consist of thin, separable fibers that have a parallel arrangement. Nonfibrous forms of tremolite, actinolite, and anthophyllite also are found naturally. However, because they are not fibrous, they are not classified as asbestos minerals.

Amphibole asbestos fibers are generally brittle and often have a rod- or needle-like shape, whereas chrysotile asbestos fibers are flexible and curved. Chrysotile, also known as white asbestos, is the predominant commercial form of asbestos; amphiboles are of minor commercial importance. Asbestos fibers do not have any detectable odor or taste. They do not dissolve in water or evaporate and are resistant to heat, fire, chemical and biological degradation. Because of these properties, asbestos has been mined for use in a wide range of manufactured products, mostly in building materials, friction products, and heat-resistant fabrics.

Since asbestos fibers may cause harmful health effects in people who are exposed, all new uses of asbestos have been banned in the United States by the EPA.

MESOTHELIOMA
Mesothelioma Cancer

Mesothelioma is cancer of the mesothelium, which is the lining that protects vital organs of the body. A diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma (often simply called mesothelioma) is very serious. Most cases are fatal within two years, although recent improvements in treatment (both chemotherapy and surgical treatment) have extended the survival times of many mesothelioma patients.

PERICARDIAL MESOTHELIOMA
The rarest form of Mesothelioma develops in the lining of the heart or pericardium. This type of Mesothelioma cancer is known as pericardial Mesothelioma.

Pericardial Mesothelioma is believed to be caused by exposure to asbestos, a mineral commonly used in fire retardant and insulating materials. Since this form of Mesothelioma cancer is rare, however, the links between asbestos exposure and the disease are not as strong as with the other forms of Mesothelioma cancer.

A diagnosis of malignant pericardial Mesothelioma is very serious. Ninty-five percent of malignant pericardial Mesothelioma cases are fatal within two years.

Our attorneys represent pericardial Mesothelioma victims, as well as spouses, sons, and daughters of people who have died from this rare form of occupational cancer. Our attorneys have obtained hundreds of millions of dollars in settlements and jury awards for our clients.

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with malignant pericardial Mesothelioma, please contact our lawyers as soon as possible. We will arrange to fly to your home anywhere in the United States within a few days. In most cases, you will not have to travel or even appear in court. We will thoroughly investigate your case and take video depositions. You will not have to pay any attorneys fees unless we obtain a financial settlement.

PERITONEAL MESOTHELIOMA
Approximately 10 to 20 percent of Mesothelioma tumors develop in the lining of the abdomen. This type of Mesothelioma is referred to as peritoneal Mesothelioma.

The only known cause of peritoneal Mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos, a mineral commonly used in fire retardant and insulating materials. The asbestos fibers may find their way into the abdomen by being swallowed or by migrating from the lungs.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma can be either benign or malignant. A diagnosis of malignant peritoneal Mesothelioma (abdominal cancer) is very serious. 95 percent of malignant peritoneal Mesothelioma cases are fatal within two years.

Our attorneys represent peritoneal Mesothelioma victims, as well as spouses, sons, and daughters of people who have died from this rare form of occupational cancer. Our attorneys have obtained hundreds of millions of dollars in settlements and jury awards for our clients.

PLEURAL MESOTHELIOMA
Nearly three-quarters of mesothelioma tumors develop in the lining of the lungs, which is known as the "pleura." Consequently, this type of mesothelioma cancer is known as pleural mesothelioma.

The only known cause of pleural mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos fibers, which are inhaled into the lungs and become lodged there. From the lung, asbestos fibers are thought to move to the pleura in a few different ways: first, by translocution (in which the fibers actually move through lung tissue to the outside of the lung and are picked up buy the pleura); second, by clearance through the lymphatic system, and third, through the blood stream.

Usually it takes at least 20 years from the time a person is exposed to asbestos until they develop mesothelioma. This is called the latency period. Sometimes the disease does not occur for 40, 50 or even 60 years after the person is exposed to asbestos. This explains the fact that the vast majority of persons diagnosed with mesothelioma are seniors. Rarely, the disease can occur in people in their 30's and 40's.
